Logo Trends for 2010

It’s no big surprise that corporate identities change with the times. Every year logo lounge (which is the site behind the inspirational book series) takes a broad look at all the logos submitted for their books, and spot the most obvious trends. The overall themes? They say:

There is plenty of optimism shining through in many [...]

Mr. Potato Head!

Yes, that’s right. Believe it or not, I’m working on concepts for a project that involves the little guy. I’ve had a nice afternoon researching vintage toy packaging. Such a tough job I have! These graphics are so fun…

Can’t wait to share my project!!

The Public Service Annoucement - Print

Next up in my typography class is designing Public Service Posters. Really what we are focusing on is the introduction of visual hierarchy—essentially the skill of guiding viewers through a chunk of information successfully. My students focus on on the PSA genre, and it must revolve around Thanksgiving in some way. To simplify things, they [...]

Hello Mrs. Eaves!

When I did my post on my favorite (for now) sans-serif typeface, Gotham, I mentioned I would come back to show you my favorite serif, Mrs. Eaves. Now, if you are a designer reading this, bets are you’re more than familiar with this font; because it’s used so much, there is a lot of debate [...]

Packaging Design: The Belly Band

A very straightforward and affordable way to create custom packaging can be utilizing the belly band— a piece of paper that wraps around the product and adheres with tape in the back. These are used from anything from food (think candy bars) to computer software packaging! Very versatile.
Recently, we created a line of bellybands for [...]

Portfolio Wrap Up

Today I’m feeling very accomplished because I am wrapping up a side project that I started months ago. One of my dreams has always been to work with a publishing company to create covers and layouts for books. Finally, I am sending off my portfolio to Chronicle Books in San Francisco. Here are just a [...]

Gotham City

Disclaimer: this post is a little more nerd-centric than usual.
As designers, we all have our go-to typefaces that we use over and over (and over and over!). And while we don’t want to get stuck in a rut, this is actually a GOOD practice! In fact, I urge my typography students to build a collection [...]

Obama’s good luck charm!

A big congrats to my client, Metal Morphosis. Apparently, during the recent presidential campaign, Barack Obama carried a slew of good luck charms in his pocket. One of them (actually, his “favorite”) was Metal Morphosis’ Braille Word Pebble! Click here for a link to the story. Below is a press slick that we whipped up [...]

Yum Yum Dim Sum

This new piece we’ve been working on just makes me hungry. These little tokens designed by Metal Morphosis have a fortune engraved on each back side. After our client commissioned us to create the packaging, we were simply told, “think well designed Chinese take out menu.”
So, that’s what we did.

And the winners are…

Pantone releases color trend forecasts every fall, and here is what they’re expecting next year. Guess it’s not a huge surprise that bright, happy colors are taking center stage in this drab economy. Good for us designers though—can’t wait to play with some of these lovely combinations!
